Even though melanoma accounts for 3% of all skin cancer cases, it results in the majority of skin cancer deaths. It is estimated that about 59,940 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed and 8,110 individuals are expected to die from this disease in the United States during 2007. Unlike many other common cancers, melanoma has a wide age distribution. It occurs in younger as well as older people, and actually, it is one of the more common cancers in adolescents and young adults(1). |
