About our client

Position Location
Director of Pre-Clinical Development Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Quebec
Salary
Highly competitive package, commensurate with experience
Responsibilities
1) Diagnose, treat, and monitor laboratory animals during the research stage of new device therapies/discoveries
2) Observe and document animal behavior, test and vaccinate animals along with performing autopsies
3) Work closely with research scientists to analyze behavior, response, or complications during new therapy development
4) Supervise technicians who conduct activities related to breeding, feeding, and maintenance of animals in a controlled laboratory environment
5) Provide clinical, surgical, and other veterinary services (as required) for all species of research animals used at client location
6) Consult with investigators, staff, and others on animal health, information, queries, problems, and models (as needed)
7) Lead improvement of departmental procedures and ensure proper adherence to them by all personnel
8) Assist in maintaining compliance with all existing regulations, requirements and standards, including departmental SOPs, federal, state, local, and AAALACi
9) Perform physical and diagnostic examinations on all species of animals purchased by the company
10) Record and report general health status and any health problems encountered or anticipated, to the departments and/or the investigators to whom the specific research animals are assigned
11) Prescribe and/or administer therapeutic regimens for all species in accordance with departmental requirements and standards, or study protocols
12) Perform or assist in anesthesia or surgery in pre-clinical research conducted by, or under the supervision of Internal Therapy Research scientists/engineers for evaluation or improvement of therapies/product designs
13) Perform anesthesia or surgery on all species for purposes of treatment of specific health problems
14) Collect or assist in collecting various specimens from all species as required for diagnosis and/or evaluation
15) Inspect animal facilities, vendors, and other sites where animals, owned or leased by the company, are maintained and provide a written report of these inspections
16) Review department policies, procedures, and standards to ensure that they are in line with those of the company, government, or other agencies
17) Attend and participate in both internal and external meetings, conferences, conventions, workshops, continuing education courses, etc., (as assigned/required) for the further enhancement of knowledge and abilities in this or related areas
18) Initiate and follow through on specification and purchase of additional equipment and accessories
19) Train or assist in training associates in animal care and use procedures and issues as their jobs require
Requirements
1) Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) as recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada
2) Completed formal residency or training program in veterinary medicine and surgery or 3 – 5 years experience in laboratory animal medicine
3) Experience in animal techniques and procedures used in medical device or neuroscience studies
4) Experience in leading and managing animal facilities
5) Experience in recruiting, managing, and developing laboratory staff
6) Experience in annual budgeting process and managing budgets
7) Strategic planning experience
8) Good leadership skills along with ability to influence management
9) Ability to be result-oriented
10) Excellent planning/execution skills
11) Demonstrated expertise in managing multiple pre-clinical studies with various species
12) Excellent oral and written communication skills
13) Proven project management and problem-solving skills
14) Superb proficiency in shaping strategy, building networks, relationships, as well as attracting, developing, and retaining top talent
